Cop, woman hospitalised after bloody brawl

MONTEGO BAY, St James — A bloody brawl between an out-of-uniform policeman and a woman in Montego Bay on Heroes’ Day has left both hospitalised. Their wounds are not life-threatening but a video of the blood-soaked policeman walking unsteadily in the street, clutching his neck with one hand and a firearm in the other, has been making the rounds on social media.

The woman was allegedly shot and the cop stabbed with a broken bottle. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has confirmed that it is probing the incident, as it does for all shootings involving lawmen. The St James police have also launched a probe into the fracas which occurred about 3:00 pm on Sunday.

According to Jamaica Observer sources, there was an argument between the lawman and woman while both were in a bar on Union Street in Montego Bay. The argument escalated and the cop received cuts, from a broken bottle, to the left side of his neck. Four shots were allegedly fired by the lawman and the woman was hit in her left thigh.

An individual claiming to be an eyewitness said the argument escalated after the cop was stabbed. Bar patrons scrambled for cover, the eyewitness said, as gunshots filled the air.

Police sources have confirmed that the wounded lawman was in the past charged with breaching the Disaster Risk Management Act but was later cleared. He was accused of violating curfew restrictions.
