Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson on Tuesday said that one of the individuals living in America, whom the Jamaican authorities say is fuelling violent crime here and whose name was given to US law enforcers, was arrested recently.
Anderson made the disclosure during a tour of the Area Four police headquarters which has jurisdiction over Kingston and St Andrew.
“Based on intelligence briefing, there are some people abroad who are impacting violence in Jamaica. We already gave some of those names to our partners and we will give some additional names to them, and we will be pursuing criminals here and there. Fortunately, we had an arrest in the United States, recently, of one of the criminal gang leaders from Jamaica along with his second [in command]. We are working with our partners to see where this goes,” he said.
Anderson’s visit came amidst a fresh flare-up of violence in west Kingston that claimed four lives on the weekend.
The commissioner said that the police and the Jamaica Defence Force will be conducting more targeted operations in areas where gangs are seeking to thrive.
“We are now going to go through a process of deliberate searches within the areas we believe guns are, or that we believe criminal gangs use as headquarters,” he said.
Anderson pointed out that many of the usual trouble spots in Kingston have been “quiet for some time”, but that peace has been interrupted by violence in recent times.
“We have managed to do a fair amount of social intervention in those spaces. There was a football competition that was taking place in Kingston West but that was interrupted because of violence. We are going to get that started again, but we are also going to get the people who believe that they are going to disrupt normal life in communities and cause violence to go up in Kingston. We are not going to have that,” he said.
During the tour, Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor, who is in charge of Area Four operations, named a number of men he said are wanted by the police for various crimes, and urged them to turn themselves in immediately.
The senior cop warned relatives and friends of the wanted men that it is a crime to harbour a suspected criminal.
“There are some people we want right now. From the Kingston Eastern space, Andre Robinson of a William Street, Rae Town address; Hyman Foreman, otherwise called Nicely, of a Taylor Land, Bull Bay address; Ronald Smith, also known as Skull, of a Brownsland address; Romario Grant, otherwise called Kaka, of 36 Nelson Road in Kingston 13; Navardo Roberts, also known as Bees, of 2 Victoria Avenue.
“From Kingston Central we have Shanrick Nugent, also known as Dan Dan, of 5 Fleet Street; Mervin Henry, otherwise called Biggie, of 28 George’s Lane; and his twin brother, Marvin Henry.
“From Kingston West, we have Oniel Stewart, also known as Nero Blacks, of a Wellington Street address; Donovan Rowe, otherwise called Chummy, of a Hannah Town address; and Jomo Barrett of a Golden Heights address.
“All these people are wanted and must turn themselves in to the divisions called out or the nearest police station,” McGregor said.
