McIntyre qualifies for Carifta

Long distance runner Luke McIntyre of the Elite Distance Programme (EDP) ran his way to a CARIFTA qualifying standard in the Under-17 Boys’ 3 000 metres as the National Junior Championships climaxed at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex on Sunday night.

The 14-year-old athlete, who is in his first year of the Under-17 division carried a steady pace and rallied to the finish line in 9 minutes 32.62 seconds to beat the qualifying mark of 9:35.00.

McIntyre, a third form student at Harrison College is the 19th Barbadian to qualify for this year’s CARIFTA Games in Bahamas, April 8-10.

There was more success for EDP as field athlete Rowland Kirton-Browne broke her last year’s meet record of 11.12 metres in the women’s shot put with a new mark of 11.59 metres. Kevon Hinds of BC Track Club led the men’s shot put with 14.05 metres. (RW)
