Sandals Foundation, Constellation Brands partner to help train youth

MONTEGO BAY, St James — The Sandals Foundation’s work to provide educational opportunities for young people interested in a career in the hospitality industry has received a boost with a donation from international beverage distributor, Constellation Brands.

With Constellation Brands matching US$8,500 raised through the wine list of the late chairman of Sandals Resorts International, Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the foundation received US$17,000 that will go towards the implementation of training programmes. It will also be used to furnish hospitality schools and departments in Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, Barbados and The Bahamas with equipment and resources needed to train and certify the next generation of hospitality providers.

“We are grateful to our food and beverage team… and Constellation Brands that have made it possible for us to continue to support programmes that create employment, not only within our resorts but in any space across the hospitality industry,” executive director of the foundation, Heidi Clarke said during a recent cheque handover ceremony.

The well-received support is expected to provide a number of youngsters with the opportunity to tap into resources that would have otherwise been beyond their reach.

“We are extremely pleased that we have been able to raise funds to strengthen our support of livelihood training and opportunities for young people in underserved communities,” said corporate director, food and beverage at Sandals Resorts International Ricky DuQuesnay.

It’s a sentiment shared by Clarke.

“Vocational studies, for many young people, stand as the only means through which they can chart a new path from the undeserved or violent communities and create a better life for themselves,” she remarked.

Constellation Brands explained why it decided to become involved.

“Sandals Foundation shares the same philosophy, and we’re proud to partner with them to make an even bigger impact by matching the funds raised. We’re excited to be working together to provide opportunities for professional growth in our local communities,” said general manager for the Latin American region, Jose Hermosillo.
