Sherrese Andrew a Girl Guide representative of Dominica selected to attend the United nations climate change conference in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.

The Girl Guide Association of Dominica agrees that Climate change remains the most significant global threat to human life. And it is women and girls who currently suffer the worst impacts. More extreme and less predictable weather, growing food insecurity, increasing water insecurity, and unstable living conditions all combine with gender inequality to leave women more vulnerable. Despite this their views, interests and experiences are not fully or equally represented, leading to policies and programmes that are woefully inadequate. Sherrese Andrew, the advocacy mentor, co-creator and trainer of trainees for the Girl-led Action on Climate Change programme along with the Girl led action team is working to ensure that girls, young women, and their families, are more resilient to climate change and that they see a gender transformative approach to climate change policy and practice, at all levels in Dominica.

The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly referred to as Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, or COP27, will be the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference, to be held from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Using the new Girl-Led Action on Climate Change curriculum, developed with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), they are educating the girl guides of Dominica  and young women on climate change and its gender dimension. To pay it forward, each young woman then shares information and skills learnt with at least two community members and leads on a community action project of their choice. They’re calling on all young women of Dominica to join the Guiding movement and to be a part of the community action plan to help develop their leadership character and help make a difference in Dominica. For the parents that are interested in enrolling their daughters in Guides please contact the chief commissioners Valencia Webb at 285 4154 or email them at girlguidesa”yahoo.com.
