Warning as storms ‘coming closer’

Barbadian citizens and businesses are being urged to take preparedness for storms seriously, amid indications that these weather systems may be coming closer to the island.

The appeal, including putting emergency plans in place early, for more youth volunteers to join District Emergency Organisations and insurance of properties, were made on Sunday during a town Hall meeting at Alexandra Secondary school organised by the Barbados Meteorological Services and the Department of Emergency Management (DEM).

Meteorologist Tia Browne told the audience the Barbados Meteorological Services had improved modelling and a better capability to forecast weather patterns.

“The storms are coming a little bit closer,” Browne told Daily Nation. She said that based on data which covered a 30-year period it appeared that storms were coming closer, between 100 and 50 kilometres. (HH)
