Loic George will spend the next seven years at the Dominica State Prison after being sentenced on March 12 2024, for the offence of Unlawful Sexual Connection to an eleven year old girl.
The Criminal judge Justice Collin Williams did not depart from the sentencing guidelines as he stated there were no exceptional circumstances to warrant the departure. He arrived at a starting point of 6 years and 3 months after assessing the consequences and seriousness of the offender’s actions.
The judge listed the aggravating factors of the offence as follows; it was committed on the victim’s mother property and the offender guided the victim away from the scope of her mother.
One mitigating factor of the offence was listed which was no violence was used in the commission of the offence. The aggravating factors of the offence outweighed the mitigating factors therefore the figure was adjusted upwards by 3 months, bringing it to a total of 6 years and 6 months.
The court further considered the aggravating factors of the offender. These include the significant disparity in age as the offender was 28 at the time of the offence while the victim was 11 years old. The offender also continued to communicate with the minor after the offence.
Further, the mitigating factor put forward by the offender’s lawyer was that he is contrite. However, the judge said this was not supported by any evidence. The figure was then adjusted upwards by another 6 months. No further adjustments were made and the offender George was sentenced to 7 years in prison from 5th March, 2024.
